The Second PCF World Summit brought together over 100 representatives of retailers, companies, international organisations, non-governmental organisations, research institutes and governments from 17 countries gathered and exchanged their experience and views on product carbon footprinting with regards to harmonisation.

Jeffrey D. Rice is programme manager at The Sustainability Consortium, a U.S. based independent organisation with members such as Wal-Mart and Pepsico. Jeff presents the consortium which creates common infrastructures and metrics for assessing and sharing sustainability data in the value chain.
Corinne Mercadie, Packaging and Environment Manager at Casino, speaks on the French retailer's strategy on greenhouse gas emissions assessments and consumer information channels such as on package and in-shop magazines.
Yumie Kawashima is an executive assistant to Chief Merchandise Officer at Aeon Group, the largest Japanese retailer. In her presentation she outlines Aeon's activities for reducing the life cycle greenhouse gas emissions of products and their visualisation at the company's point of sales.
Claudia Sprinz is consumer campaigner at Greenpeace Austria. In her presentation she introduces the climate action campaign “1,000,000 Actions for Climate Protection” and explains it relates to the recently introduced carbon label at Hofer’s “Zurück zum Ursprung” brand.
Christian Hochfeld, Deputy Director at German Öko-Institut – Institute for Applied Ecology, presents results and recommendations from the pilot phase of the PCF Project and touches upon future development in communication beyond carbon labelling for fostering climate compatible consumption.
Robin Dickinson, Senior International Projects Manager at U.K.'s Carbon Trust speaks on the current status of the Carbon Trust’s international product carbon footprinting and carbon labelling activities.
Prof. Dr. Sven-Olof Ryding is Managing Director at the Swedish Environmental Management Council (SEMCo). In his presentation he introduces background and aim of the international Climate Declaration System and its link to existing ISO standards.
Ralf Martin Müller of TÜV Rheinland Group, Germany sheds light on possible issues in certification in carbon footprinting such as with regard to self declaration and certificationand worldwide certification markets.
Rasmus Priess, co-founder of the PCF World Forum and Issue Manager carbon footprinting gives an outlook on the future of the PCF World Forum and the upcoming PCF World Forum conferences, taking a closer look at sector approaches in value chain GHG accounting.
Pavel Misiga of DG Environment / European Commission (on behalf of Timo Mäkelä) outlines in his keynote the impact of carbon footprinting on EU environmental policy, e.g. by means of a possible integration into ecodesign, green procurement and labelling instruments.
Prof. Dr. Matthias Finkbeiner holds the chair for Sustainable Engineering at Technische Universität Berlin and is Chairman of ISO TC207/SC5 Life Cycle Assessment. Heis engaged in the major international product carbon footprinting standardisation efforts. In his lecture he reflects on future development (needs) in product carbon footprinting.
Cynthia Cummis is Senior Associate and project manager of the Product and Supply Chain Initiative at World Resources Institute, Washington D.C. In her presentation she explains the role and efforts of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Product and Scope 3 Initiative in harmonising GHG accounting in the value chain and demonstrates engagement opportunities for stakeholders.
Dr. Klaus Radunsky of the Federal Environment Agency of Austria is Co-Convener of ISO 14067 "Carbon Footprint of Products". He gives profound insights into the ongoing ISO 14067 process and progress since the release of the first working draft of the upcoming standard released on 2 September 2009.
Frances Way is Head of Supply Chain at the UK based Carbon Disclosure Project. She highlights experiences and challenges with the CDP Supply Chain Program working with more than 40 multinational companies and over 1,400 suppliers to advance supply chain GHG emissions reporting.
Luke Upchurch works as Head of Media for the UK office of the consumer protection organisation Consumers International. In his presentation he reflects on the consumer’s viewpoint on Product Carbon Footprinting as well as difficulties with greenwashing.
Panel Discussion chaired by Rasmus Priess with Prof. Dr. Matthias Finkbeiner (Technical University Berlin, Germany), Jeffrey D. Rice (Sustainability Consortium, USA), Cynthia Cummis (GHG Protocol Product and Scope 3 Initiative, USA), Dr. Klaus Radunsky (Co-Convener ISO 14067 “Carbon Footprint of Products, Austria) and Luke Upchurch (Consumers International, UK). The panel discussed next steps for international harmonisation in Product Carbon Footprinting. Furthermore, the panellists debated various related aspects, such as desirable composition of PCFs.
The open space discussions allowed participants to tackle certain raised issues in more depth. The video subsumes the results of the various working groups such as “Is harmonisation achievable?”, “Product carbon footprinting in the agricultural sector” and “Communication of Product Carbon footprinting”.
Pavel Misiga is Head of Unit Environment and Industry at DG Environment / European Commission. His presentation outlines the role of the Commission in Product Carbon Footprinting, its aim for harmonisation in the field and further actions planed.
Alison Watson is senior analyst at the New Zealand Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. She manages the New Zealand GHG Footprint Strategy for the land-based primary sector. In her lecture she describes the Ministry's strategy and methodological issues that need to be resolved.
Chie Nakaniwa serves as manager and researcher at the Japan Environmental Management Association for Industry (JEMAI). In her presentation she shares insights on the Japanese Carbon Footprint of Products Pilot Project and the government's Action Plan for Achieving a low-carbon Society of 2008.
