The 4th PCF World Summit “From Standardisation to Communication”, 20-21 October 2010 in Berlin, will dedicate two full days to help you raise and discuss important questions on the current status and perspectives of standardisation and communication in product carbon footprinting:
Day 1, 20 October, 9:00 – 18:00
Update on international developments in Product Carbon Footprinting and GHG accounting in the value chain
As a basis for the Summit’s discussions, Rasmus Priess, PCF World Forum, will introduce recent international developments in standardisation and applications of product carbon footprinting.
GHG Protocol Product and Scope 3 Standards
The World Resources Institute and World Business Council for Sustainable Development will present details on the results of the road testing of the new GHG Protocol Standards and how these are shaping the standards to be published later this year.
Selected companies that have participated in the GHG Protocol road testing will share their insights and experience in applying the draft standards.
ISO 14067 “Carbon Footprint of Products”
The upcoming ISO 14067 standard has been significantly advanced at the recent meeting in Mexico and an update on progress and issues will be presented to the Summit participants.
Updates on significant regional and country initiatives
The European Commission will present the current status and first results of the EU studies on product carbon footprinting and GHG reporting.
Updates on the French environmental labelling initiative, with particular emphasis on the recently introduced experimentation phase will also be provided and discussed with participants.
Networking with speakers and practitioners
Throughout the two days of the 4th PCF World Summit, there will be extensive opportunities to engage with speakers and practitioners through question rounds, open space discussions and individual conversations in lunch and coffee breaks.
The exclusive low carbon network dinner will round off Day 1 of the Summit.
Day 2, 21 October, 9:00 – 17:00
Open Space discussions on dedicated topics in carbon footprint communication
Previous summits have shown the great value of open space discussions and a clear need for longer interactive sessions.
Day 2 of the Summit will feature three facilitated tracks with dedicated topics related to carbon footprint communication. Each track will include input presentations on the issue at hand. Discussion results will be summed up and presented to the plenary at the end of Day 2.
Summit participants may suggest and facilitate additional topics of interest.
Track 1: Value chain transparency
- What level of transparency is needed to ensure credibility in consumer and stakeholder communication while maintaining confidentiality of sensible data?
- What should be made transparent and how?
- How can availability of high quality data in value chains be improved?
- What are best practices in value chain transparency?
Track 2: Communication in the supply chain
- How can exchange of carbon and environmental information along the supply chain be facilitated?
- What are obstacles and success factors in supply chain communication and engagement?
- How can suppliers deal with conflicting customers‘ data requests?
Track 3: Consumer insights
- What drives low-carbon consumer behaviour?
- What information do consumers need to make low-carbon consumption choices? How should information be provided to consumers?
Wrap-up and get-together
Results of the open space discussions will be shared in the plenary. The Summit will close at 17:00 with an informal get-together allowing for personal wrap-ups of the two Summit days with fellow speakers and participants.
The 4th PCF World Summit “From Standardisation to Communication” will take place on 20-21 October 2010 in Berlin, Germany.

Two Days of Valuable Insights into Product Carbon Footprinting
The 3rd PCF World Summit featured two days of talks and discussions by representatives from industry programs for product carbon footprinting, stakeholder organizations, and country initiatives. Building on the success of the previous two summits, the 3rd PCF World Summit highlighted:
- Sector approaches – with sector champions and pioneers in i.a. agriculture, beverages, chemicals, food, logistics, and media presenting best practices and solutions for reducing their own GHG emissions – and those of their customers
- Recent developments in emerging global standards for measuring value chain GHG emissions
- How emerging international initiatives are taking sector-specific requirements and realities into account
- Stakeholder perspectives of climate-related consumer communication
Carbon Footprint Product Exhibition
For the first time, the PCF World Summit presented an international Product Exhibition –featuring products with calculated carbon footprints used as the basis for consumer communication. This gave the participants first hand insights into the rapid international developments in carbon footprinting and labelling.
Low Carbon Network Dinner
As a tradition at the PCF World Summits, the Low Carbon Network Dinner on the evening of the first conference day gave the participants a special opportunity to network in a relaxed atmosphere while experiencing exquisite low carbon cuisine. This year again, the exclusive dinner was vegan, prepared by famous Chef Stephan Hentschel of Berlin’s best kept secret restaurant named Cookies Cream.
