In 2008 the supermarket chain Casino launched the carbon label program L´Indice Carbone in cooperation with the French environmental agency ADEME and the private sector Bio Intelligence Service organization. The amount of CO2 emissions that goes into a product is printed directly on the package, with a scale that shows the relative amount of GHG emissions per 100g of the product. The following stages are taken into account and assessed with the Bilan Carbone tool:
- Production stages (agricultural, in the case of food products)
- Manufacturing of the product
- Transport, from the field to the Casino warehouses
- Packaging, from raw material extraction to recycling
- Distribution, from the Casino warehouses to the consumer’s home.
